Thesis Ledger — 2026-H2

Thesis Ledger

Running record of what the weekly digest tracked. The weekly digest updates this page the same week it fires.

How to read: each thesis has one row per week it moved. The verdicts are Confirmed · Reinforced · Clean evidence · Weakened · Killed · New candidate. "Weakened" means at least one signal cuts against the claim. "Killed" means the claim no longer holds. If more than six weeks pass with no evidence on either side, the ledger calls this Dormancy and treats it as a Weakened signal.

Platform Is Trust

Status: Reinforced · liability leg · 7 weeks of evidence (W34–W43) · last touched W43

Stripe Radar catches token fraud at AI companies. Stripe built Radar for payment fraud, not for token fraud. Revolut's PRAGMA uses 80M customer records. S&P Global bought the audit firm and the data feed instead of an exchange. The accumulated-judgment moat extends to new asset classes. Builders do not rebuild it.

W41 signal against — Meta, Visa, and Google each launched a different agent-vouching protocol in one week. The thesis says one trust layer concentrates. Three concurrent architectures suggest a multi-trust equilibrium. If that holds, the moat is smaller than the thesis predicts.

W42 signal against — JPMorgan blocked outside AI agents from Chase. JPMorgan has the largest trust base in US banking. AI assistants still recommend Mercury over Chase by more than five to one. The agent chose the open platform, not the trusted one.

W43 reinforcement — Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Citi blocked or limited outside agents after unauthorized agents acted on accounts. Amex chose to cover losses from a registered agent's purchase error. Trust now attaches to the firm that carries the agent's liability.

Position implication — Long the operators that already own the data feed (payment networks, large neobanks), but only those that admit agents. Shorter leash on any firm whose moat is a single-vendor trust claim or a closed door.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W34 | Clean evidence | Stripe Radar now catches token fraud at AI companies | | W35 | Clean evidence | Revolut PRAGMA; parallel builds at Nubank, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Plaid | | W38 | Clean evidence | S&P Global bought the audit firm and the data feed | | W40 | Clean evidence | Agentic commerce waits on trust, not on capability | | W41 | Confirmed · fragmentation risk | Three incompatible agent-vouching protocols launched | | W42 | Weakened · incumbent leg | JPMorgan blocked outside agents; agents recommend Mercury five to one | | W43 | Reinforced · liability leg | Four banks blocked agents; Amex chose to pay for agent purchase errors |

Where Cards Can't Reach

Status: Reinforced · 5 weeks of evidence · last touched W42

The thesis: KRW stablecoin matters only in categories cards never reached. The evidence runs through tokenized securities (Korea's rail), programmable agent money (Stripe's assembled stack), and cross-border fintech distribution (Nubank's Nu Global over a £10B M&A).

W34 counter — Stripe assembled the stack as a whole. A new entrant did not. The category was right. The winner was not.

Position implication — Long the categories with no card equivalent (programmable agent money, tokenized long-tail securities). Do not short cards.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W34 | Confirmed · wrong winner | Stripe assembled Tempo/MPP/Privy/Bridge. Ramp shipped USDC agent wallets | | W36 | Confirmed | Korea stablecoin arrived at tokenized securities, not at card replacement | | W37 | Reinforced · Korea leg | Hanwha built tokenized securities on Avalanche. The cash leg is still unnamed | | W41 | Reinforced | Nubank chose Nu Global over the £10B Monzo deal after a 10% stock drop | | W42 | Reinforced · via the card network | Visa Direct put USDC prefunding into production; Standard Chartered delayed its $2T forecast to 2030 |

The Ledger

Status: Confirmed · 8 weeks of evidence (deepest supported) · last touched W43

Tokenization is the current cycle. The rails extend public-market machinery to long-tail assets. Institutional adoption is accelerating. The open question: value accumulates on open rails or on captured ones.

W34 counter — Stripe forked a decade of open Web3 work into a closed loop it owns. Open rails and captured rails are not the same investment.

Position implication — The thesis is confirmed. The sub-question is where the fee pool lands. Underwrite open-rail bets only where the counter-signal weakens.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W34 | Reinforced · contradicted on ownership | Stripe forked open Web3 into a closed loop | | W35 | Reinforced | Japan blockchain settlement; Mirae $109B; Schwab added SOL/AVAX/LINK | | W36 | Reinforced | Korea 3-stage plan; ICE–tZERO; Kraken–LSE; Securitize–Socios | | W37 | Confirmed | Hanwha–Avalanche; SEBI Demat 2.0; DBS–Citi tokenized deposits; Nasdaq–Kraken | | W38 | Confirmed | Circle Arc mainnet (BlackRock, Visa validators); S&P–OpenZeppelin | | W40 | Confirmed | Lloyds–Visa USDC settlement; Robinhood Wallet with 190+ stock tokens | | W42 | Confirmed | BNY–Citadel tokenized Treasury repo; Morgan Stanley tokenized equities in Q1 2027; DRW–Marex tokenized index swap | | W43 | Reinforced | JPM Coin moved to Ethereum ($7B a day); SoFi tokenized deposit; HSBC HKD stablecoin for retail |

What Survives

Status: Clean evidence · weakening on dormancy · last touched W37 · 6 weeks silent

Execution is commoditized. Value polarizes to the financial infrastructure and the cultural capital at the edges. The hosting layer in the middle is the one that gets bought.

Dormancy call — Four weeks passed with no confirming or contradicting signal. If no evidence arrives by W44, demote this thesis to Weakened.

Position implication — Asymmetric: long the rails and the cultural anchors; avoid the middle (hosted inference, SaaS wrappers).

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W36 | Confirmed | Nvidia paid $12.9B for Hugging Face's position, not for its revenue | | W37 | Clean evidence | Coinbase folded social back into the wallet; Robinhood chain out-earned Solana |

Korea sells the grid, not just the chip

Status: Reinforced · new candidate W37 · last touched W40

Korea is not just the memory story. KEPCO's capex, transformer exports, ultra-high-voltage orders, and the AIDC special act all run on the same shortage. Different tickers; same thesis.

Position implication — Take direct exposure through transformer and turbine firms (Hyosung Heavy, LS Electric) in addition to the memory names, not instead of them.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W37 | New candidate | KEPCO ₩55.3T plan through 2030; AIDC act in drafting | | W38 | Reinforced · Korea leg | Hyosung Heavy orders; Goldman lifted US power CAGR to 3.5% | | W40 | Reinforced · Korea leg | Korean transformer exports $302M, up 38%; LS Electric won ₩181.2B |

The AI buildout is a credit trade

Status: Confirmed · new candidate W38 · last touched W43

The AI capex cycle runs on vendor loans and BB+ debt, not on cash flow. If rates stay high, the discount rate works against the equity story. It does not work against the debt-service story until the debt rolls.

W41 reinforcement — Damodaran: the 10-year rate rose 54bp in September. This is the top 10% of 770 monthly changes since 1962. Stock prices held. The rate-multiple gap widened.

W42 confirmation — CoreWeave bonds approached a 15% yield. Default insurance priced more than 60% insolvency odds within five years. Firmus withdrew a $30B IPO. Ramp data show enterprise token spend flat for two months.

W43 reinforcement · equity leg — Global AI debt issuance fell from $113B in June to $23B in September (FT). About $18B of Oracle campus loans moved into stressed territory. Meta plans non-voting Class C shares to raise capital. The 10-year yield fell below 5%, and AI stocks still fell. The pressure now comes from the spend, not from the rate.

Position implication — The equity trade and the credit trade are separate here. A long AI-equity position needs conviction that revenue arrives before the debt rolls. The credit trade is cleaner.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W38 | New candidate | Apollo may raise SoftBank's OpenAI loan to $9B against Vision Fund 2 collateral | | W40 | Reinforced | Broadcom lending Anthropic $42B; SoftBank $11B BB+; datacenter HY priced at a discount | | W41 | Reinforced | 10-year +54bp in September; stocks held; rate-multiple gap widened | | W42 | Confirmed | CoreWeave bonds near 15%; CDS implies >60% default odds in 5 years; Firmus IPO withdrawn | | W43 | Reinforced · equity leg | AI debt issuance $113B → $23B; Meta non-voting shares; yields fell and AI stocks fell |

Memory stopped being a cycle

Status: Weakened · new candidate W40 · last touched W42

Micron has 75% of 2027 output committed. Customers now ask for 2031 supply. Long-term agreements rose from 16 to 26. If prices are set years ahead, the peak-and-bust framing stops applying.

W42 signal against — Samsung Electronics and SK hynix fell more than 9% in one session on fears of CXMT DRAM supply. The market still prices memory as a cycle. Citi says the CXMT effect stays limited before 2028.

Position implication — Pending a second confirmation. Prefer evidence from a second supplier's book depth, not just Micron's.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W40 | New candidate | Micron 75% of 2027 committed; customers asking for 2031 | | W42 | Weakened | Samsung and SK hynix −9% in one session on CXMT supply fears |

The agent payment layer is three incompatible protocols

Status: Weakened · abstraction layer · last touched W43

Meta PAP (business-vouched, Stripe/Shopify/Walmart). Visa TAP (network-vouched). Google UCP (platform-vouched). None defines the fee yet. The protocol that defines the fee first owns the credential every agent carries.

W43 signal against — Stripe Link Agent Wallet hides card types, tokens, and payment protocols from agent code. If a wallet sits above all protocols, the wallet owns the credential. The protocol does not.

Position implication — Too early for a position. Watch which protocol attaches to the first large transaction volume. The pair trade may be short whichever vouching architecture loses share and long the one that gains merchant adoption.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W41 | New candidate | Meta, Visa, and Google launched three incompatible designs in one week | | W43 | Weakened · abstraction layer | Stripe Link Agent Wallet abstracts protocols; Mastercard opened agent payments early access |

Return on Tokens

Status: Reinforced · new candidate W34 · last touched W43

Intelligence becomes a metered input with a procurement function. Inference spend follows the path of cloud spend, faster.

W43 reinforcement — OpenRouter weekly tokens rose from 0.5T to 164T since January 2025. The price per million tokens fell from $0.77 to $0.14. The top lab's token share fell from 40% to 21%. Ramp now sells model routing and token spend management.

Position implication — Long the routing and procurement layer. Avoid bets that need one model to stay on top.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W34 | New candidate | OpenRouter to Stripe, Ramp's Router.com, Merge for Workforce in five days | | W43 | Reinforced · out of dormancy | Token price −82%; top-lab share 40% → 21%; Ramp sells routing |

The Compute Tax

Status: Weakened · unit price · new candidate W36 · last touched W43

Memory scarcity propagates from wafer to cloud bill to software invoice. If AI-era software carries a real marginal cost, SaaS gross-margin assumptions need rewriting.

W43 signal against — Token unit prices fell 82% on OpenRouter. Large firms used 5.1x more tokens but spent only 2.4x more. The cost pressure is in volume, not in unit price.

Position implication — Do not underwrite SaaS margin collapse on unit cost alone. Watch volume growth per customer instead.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W36 | New candidate | Memory scarcity reached the software invoice; Salesforce moved to outcome pricing | | W43 | Weakened · unit price | Token price −82%; large-firm spend grew 2.4x on 5.1x tokens |

The Power Bill

Status: Clean evidence · grid leg · new candidate W35 · last touched W43

Every AI capex model has a power constraint. The constraint is political (local opposition, moratoria) and physical (grid connection delays).

W43 evidence — Microsoft ended its capacity agreement at Nscale's Loughton site. The cause is power supply delays that can extend into the 2030s.

Position implication — Prefer data center operators with signed grid connections. Discount pipelines that do not have them.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W35 | New candidate | About 70% of Americans oppose a nearby data center; Pennsylvania restrictions | | W43 | Clean evidence · grid leg | Microsoft exited Nscale Loughton over grid delays into the 2030s |

AI-Native Services

Status: Weakened · dormancy · new candidate W34 · last touched W35 · 8 weeks silent

Sell the outcome (the legal or accounting result), priced per completed unit, not the software.

Dormancy call — The ledger set W43 as the review week. No outcome-priced contract appeared in the feed. The thesis is demoted to Weakened. One new outcome-priced contract restores it.

| Week | Verdict | Note | |---|---|---| | W34 | New candidate | Emergence Capital's AINS bet: price per completed contract | | W35 | Confirmed | Podium contracts went from $6,500 to $30–40K a year | | W43 | Weakened · dormancy | Eight weeks with no outcome-priced contract |

Dormancy watch
